Dr Adam Rosenthal
Research Interests
Dr Adam Rosenthal's main research themes are in: Gynaecological Cancer and Ovarian Cancer
My research interests include ovarian cancer screening, familial gynaecological cancer and the molecular biology of vulval neoplasia. My professional interests are the management of gynaecological cancers, especially using laparoscopic surgery, the assessment of risk in familial gynaecological cancer syndromes and screening for gynaecological cancers. I teach on various laparoscopic surgery courses.
I am Clinical Lead on the UK Familial Ovarian Cancer Screening Study, which is co-ordinated by the UCL Elizabeth Garret Anderson Institute for Women’s Health.
I am part of the vulval neoplasia research group, which includes members of the Barts Cancer Institute and the Centre for Cutaneous Research in the Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular Sciences.
Profile
I qualified from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London, in 1992. I then undertook general Obstetrics and Gynaecology training in London, working at various prestigious hospitals, including St. Mary’s, Queen Charlotte’s, the Hammersmith, and Chelsea and Westminster.
In 1999, I completed three years’ research at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, leading to a PhD in the molecular biology of vulval cancer. During this period I also worked on the first randomised trial of ovarian cancer screening in the general population, and saw patients in the hospital's specialist Familial Cancer Clinic and Vulval Clinic.
In 2008, I completed three years' subspecialty training in gynaecological oncology and minimal access surgery at University College Hospital (UCH), London. Whilst there, I helped to set up Phase Two of the UK Familial Ovarian Cancer Screening Study (UK FOCSS). This is the world's largest trial of ovarian cancer screening in women at increased risk of the disease.
Since January 2010, I have been Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist and Senior Lecturer at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. I am also an Honorary Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist at UCH, London, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London, from where I am Clinical Lead on the UK FOCSS.
I have published extensively on ovarian cancer screening and the molecular biology of gynaecological cancer in journals including the Lancet, the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the British Journal of Cancer. I hold a number of grants from Cancer Research UK, NHS Research and Development, the Eve Appeal and the BUPA Foundation.
My main clinical interests are laparoscopic and open gynaecological cancer surgery, colposcopy, gynaecological cancer screening, vulval diseases and inherited (familial) gynaecological cancers.
