Cancer Research UK Grand Challenge award for BCI researchers

Professor John F Marshall, Dr Becki Pike and collaborators have been announced as one of the first global research teams to be recipients of Cancer Research UK’s Grand Challenge award.

They aim to create the equivalent of a ‘Google Earth’ for cancer, mapping tumours in unprecedented detail – from the whole tumour down to individual molecules in cells...

Understanding the evolution of Barrett’s oesophagus

New grant to help predict oesophageal cancer risk

Dr Stuart McDonald will receive a programme foundation award of ~ £1.2 million from Cancer Research UK.

It will allow the group to study how the pre-cancerous condition Barrett’s oesophagus evolves into cancer through investigating genetic and structural changes in the tissue over time.

With this award the team also hopes to find novel biomarkers that can change how we look after patients with Barrett’s oesopahgus...

BCI success in Academy of Medical Sciences grant awards

Three researchers from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) have been awarded £100,000 each by the Academy of Medical Sciences. Two are here at BCI: Dr Paulo Ribeiro and Dr Angus Cameron.

The grants are designed to support researchers in the first years of their independent career with funds, training and mentoring. Angus' grant is for the study of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) while Paulo’s grant will fund a project studying tissue growth mechanisms...

New PCRF grant to support pancreatic cancer research at BCI

The Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund (PCRF) is funding six new research projects, including another here at BCI, with a total of £1 million - bringing the charity’s support for research into the UK’s most lethal cancer to over £8 million.

Included in the 6 funded projects are our Dr Patricia Sancho, and former PhD student, now postdoc at Imperial College, Dr Fieke Froeling...

Pancreatic Cancer UK grants for five BCI group leaders

New grants from the charity Pancreatic Cancer UK will fund five projects here at BCI that aim to improve treatment options for pancreatic cancer patients.

The grants come from two separate schemes run by the charity and we are extremely grateful to all its supporters who have made these awards possible.

Funding secured to revolutionise personalised prostate cancer treatments

Barts Charity have funded a new project led by Dr Gunnel Halldén in our Centre for Molecular Oncology. This work aims to develop a method to test new combinations of cancer treatments on prostate cancer.

Ultimately they hope to use the test for individual patients, to provide personalised therapies...
