Hope for reduced dependence on liver transplants

On Tuesday, a paper was published in Nature describing a Japanese group's work on growing functional human liver tissue in mice. Professor Malcolm Alison works on transplantation and stem cell biology in the Centre for Tumour Biology here at the BCI, and has commented on the work.

Currently, while the liver is quite an impressive organ that can regenerate to an extent, there is a reliance on whole or partial liver transplants to treat people with liver damage...
