Congratulations to Professor John Gribben, who was recently awarded with the prestigious Binet-Rai Medal for his outstanding contribution to Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) research.

Professors Binet & Rai personally presented the award to John, a great surprise to him as he had not been told about the award beforehand.

John said "I am honoured to have received this award from two of the giants in CLL. The staging systems in CLL are named after Professor Binet and Professor Rai so to have received this very prestigious award from them personally is just amazing. I had no idea that this was going to happen and was shocked when I realised it was me who was going to be the recipient this year. I was quite overcome. The medal was presented to me at the award dinner that evening”

The award was presented during the 17th international workshop on CLL (iwCLL), held on May 12-15, 2017 in New York. The iwCLL was founded in 1979 and is now the largest international meeting dedicated to the advancement of research in the pathobiology and treatment of these blood cancers.

The Binet-Rai Medal is presented in recognition of the significant contribution made by individuals in CLL research. Professor Gribben was acknowledged for his work on the impact of CLL on the host immune system and delineating the mechanisms for this and for his pioneering work on stem cell transplantation in CLL.

John said, on receiving the Medal, “Previous winners have included both Professor Rai and Binet themselves, Professor Michael Keating (MD Anderson), Professor Michael Hallek (University of Cologne), Professor Tom Kipps (University of California San Diego Moores Cancer Center), Professor Carlo Croce (Ohio State University, and Professor Peter Hillmen (Leeds Institute of Cancer) so I am in very prestigious company indeed!”.
