You will be a key member of the Director’s Office, gaining an insight into the day-to-day workings of a busy, high-level university office. You will be the first point of contact for all internal and external visitors.

Why do we have this position?
The Barts Cancer Institute (BCI) is one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the UK and is based in one of London’s leading medical schools. The BCI is committed to delivering high quality research and education.
As part of this commitment, the BCI has developed a work experience programme aimed at helping young people to develop the knowledge and skills that will help them in the competitive employment market.
We recognise that one of the barriers to finding employment is having sufficient work experience and the skills you learn in this post will be transferable and valuable across all work settings.
Who are we looking for?
This programme is aimed at a sixth form school leaver or recent graduate who is looking to develop work experience and office skills.
You do not need to have any work experience; it will be our job to provide you with that.
You will need to be committed to the 12-month programme and be able to start on the 24th September 2018.

(Predicted grades are acceptable, but qualifications must have been obtained by start date)
- Grade C or above in GCSE Mathematics and English
- A-levels, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent
- Basic Microsoft Office skills
Eligibility to work in the UK
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006.
We regret candidates requiring work permits to work in the UK will not be eligible for this programme.
What will you gain?
You will interact with a variety of people, both internal and external to the organisation. You will learn how to communicate effectively and appropriately.
Organisational Skills & Time Management
You will be required to multitask and to organise your own workload to meet given deadlines.
You will learn how to use Outlook, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel (as well as some non-Office systems including website management) in a work environment, and apply the skills daily
You will interact with other members of staff and work as part of a team.
Build confidence to pursue a career in your chosen field with interview experience and good knowledge of demands in a busy office environment.
Real Work Experience
Exposure to the real working world and the challenges and opportunities that come with it. You will obtain demonstrable work experience that will make you more attractive to future employers.
How will we support you?
You will receive training and detailed guidance on all aspects of the work that you will be given to do. You will be able to attend IT courses for Microsoft Office applications if required.
You will be working closely with the Office Manager and other staff who will provide guidance and supervision. Ongoing support and advice will be delivered throughout the whole duration of the programme.
You will receive feedback throughout the year and you will have periodic appraisal meetings.
How will we choose the successful applicant?
- Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by Monday, 17th September 2018.
- Interview and a short assessment will take place on Thursday, 20th September 2018. The successful candidate will be informed about the outcome by the end of the interview round.
- The start date will be Monday, 24th September 2018.
