SUMMARY:Special Seminar - Prof. Erwei Song
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Professor Erwei Song from the Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) to present a Special Seminar at the BCI on Monday 5th August. For more information about Prof. Song’s research\, please click here. \nThe seminar will be titled: ‘Treat the cancer soil: Turn foes to friends’ \nThe seminar will be held in the Lister and Young Seminar Room\, 1– 2pm. \nIf you would like to arrange to talk with Prof. Song\, please contact Emily Marsh (e.marsh@qmul.ac.uk). \nAbstract: Current paradigms of cancer-centric therapeutics are usually not sufficient to eradicate the malignancy\, while cancer stroma may prompt tumor relapse and therapeutic resistance. Among all the stromal cells that populate the tumor microenvironment\, tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs)\, cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and tumor-infiltrated lymphocytes (TILs) are the most abundant and are critically involved in cancer progression. Tumor stromal cells regulate the biology of tumor cells via cell-cell contact\, numerous regulatory factors and synthesizing or remodeling the extracellular matrix\, and thus affect cancer initiation and development. Therefore\, recent characterization of tumor microenvironment brings stroma-targeting therapies for cancer treatment onto the agenda. In our studies\, we not only underscore the contribution of tumor stroma components to cancer progression\, but also highlight the relevant translational advances and potential therapeutic strategies that target tumor soil for cancer treatment.

SUMMARY:Thursday Seminar Series - Professor Angus Lamond
DESCRIPTION:As part of the BCI’s Seminar Series\, we are pleased to welcome Professor Angus Lamond from the University of Dundee to present at the BCI on Thursday 6th June. For more information about Prof Lamond’s research\, please click here and see document attached. \nThe seminar is titled: ‘Deep Proteomes\, iPS cells & Data Mountains’ \nThe seminar will be held in the Lister and Young Seminar Room\, 12.30pm – 13.30pm. \nIf you would like to arrange to talk with Prof Lamond\, please contact Emily Marsh (e.marsh@qmul.ac.uk). \nAbstract: \nDeep mining of proteomes\, using mass spectrometry (MS) based proteomics technology\, can provide invaluable insights\, at a systems level\, into both physiological responses in healthy cells and mechanisms causing disease phenotypes. This allows unbiased\, global\, quantitative measurements linking cellular phenotypes with changes in protein dynamics in both healthy and diseased cells. Furthermore\, beyond identifying protein abundance\, proteomics technology can now also provide a flexible suite of quantitative assays that can be used to characterize a multi-dimensional array of ‘Protein Properties’ that affect cell phenotypes. This includes\, for example\, subcellular protein localization\, turnover rates\, posttranslational modifications\, cell cycle variation and specific protein complexes and proteinprotein interactions etc. A major challenge that now emerges from this ability to generate very large sets of proteomics data is how to manage\, analyse and integrate the huge resulting volumes of complex information. I will describe a recent project where we have used quantitative proteomics for large-scale studies of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)\, involving the analysis of over 200 iPSC lines derived from both healthy donors and patient cohorts with specific inherited disorders. This project highlights some of the technical and analytical challenges inherent in performing proteomic analyses at this scale. I will also describe user-friendly\, computational tools we have built for the effective management and sharing of these large\, multidimensional data sets (see; www.peptracker.com/epd).

SUMMARY:Thursday Seminar Series - Dr Barrie Peck
DESCRIPTION:As part of the BCI’s Seminar Series\, we are pleased to welcome Dr Barrie Peck from The Institute of Cancer Research to present at the BCI on Thursday 28th March. For more information about Dr Peck’s research\, please read the biography below. \nThe seminar will be titled: ‘Modelling the tumour microenvironment to identify novel targets in cancer’ \nThe seminar will be held in the Lister and Young Seminar Room\, 12.30pm – 13.30pm. \nIf you would like to arrange to talk with Dr Peck\, please contact Denise Gardner (d.gardner@qmul.ac.uk). \n  \nBiography: \nDoctor Barrie Peck studied Molecular Biology and Genetics at Royal Holloway before moving to Imperial College London to complete a PhD in studying the role and regulation of forkhead transcription factors in breast cancer. After this\, he moved to the London Research Institute (now the Crick Institute) to the lab of Prof. Almut Schulze to study cancer metabolism. This work focussed on identifying novel cancer-specific dependencies in cancer metabolism. Indeed\, as part of the Lipid metabolism consortium\, they identified ACSS2 as a fundamental dependency of aggressive breast and prostate cancers. There are now significant efforts in developing small molecule inhibitors to target ACSS2 in cancer. \nDr. Peck then moved to the Institute of Cancer Research to the lab of Dr. Rachael Natrajan to identify novel tumour suppressors in breast cancer. At the ICR he has developed bespoke 3-dimensional screening pipelines and discovered novel genes that impact disease progression and response to targeted therapies. This work was recently awarded a BCN Catalyst grant in collaboration with Pfizer. \nDr. Peck has a keen interest in functional genomics\, cancer cell metabolism and the impact extrinsic factors\, such as diet\, can have on disease trajectory in cancer.
