Understanding the evolution of Barrett’s oesophagus

New grant to help predict oesophageal cancer risk

Dr Stuart McDonald will receive a programme foundation award of ~ £1.2 million from Cancer Research UK.

It will allow the group to study how the pre-cancerous condition Barrett’s oesophagus evolves into cancer through investigating genetic and structural changes in the tissue over time.

With this award the team also hopes to find novel biomarkers that can change how we look after patients with Barrett’s oesopahgus...

Improving transplant therapy through

Two papers have been published by Dr Jeff Davies’ group focusing on the role of immunology in bone marrow transplant, a common and effective treatment for many types of blood cancer.

Both papers are examples of taking a clinical problem into the laboratory to find out why it’s happening and how we might go about fixing it. The second won our Paper of the Month competition in April 2016...

New study published in Clinical Cancer Research by Prof Balkwill

Chemotherapy before surgery could boost ovarian cancer response to immunotherapy

Professor Fran Balkwill has published a study on ovarian cancer responses to treatment, which could mean hope for patients whose cancer has already spread.

The findings suggest that giving chemotherapy before surgery could improve tumour responses to immunotherapy given afterwards, by making the cancer cells more susceptible to immune attack by the immune system...

Dr Susana Godinho awarded the prestigious Lister Prize – a first for QMUL

Dr Susana Godinho in our Centre for Molecular Oncology has become the first lecturer at BCI - and Queen Mary University of London as a whole - to be awarded the prestigious Lister Prize Fellowship.

Just five excellent researchers receive this award each year...
