This month, we welcomed a total of 43 aspiring young scientists from across London to the Barts Cancer Institute (BCI), Queen Mary University of London, where they had the opportunity to meet researchers, try their hands in the lab and learn more about what it takes to become a scientist.

A team of Barts Cancer Institute researchers from Professor Claude Chelala’s group took part in the NIHR Great Ormond Street Hospital Biomedical Research Centre Family Fun Day. The fun-filled afternoon provides an amazing opportunity for children, young people and their families to take part in fun, educational, hands-on activities and meet researchers.

Last month, Barts Cancer Institute’s Dr Bela Wrench hosted a session as part of the Bloodwise Lab Tour Programme, aimed at bringing current and potential supporters closer to research funded by the charity and to demonstrate the impact they can have in the fight against blood cancer.

BCI held the 2018 VOICE (Vision On Information, Confidence & Engagement) course- a study week that aims to take patient advocates from bedside to bench by providing an introduction to basic cancer biology, research terminology and study design.

We were recently visited by two members of the CRUK Gibraltar Committee, Giovi and Deborah, who came to the BCI for a laboratory tour with Dr Ana Rio-Machin, a postdoctoral researcher in the Centre for Haemato-Oncology. Ana’s research focuses on leukaemia, a type of blood cancer in which patients present an abnormal growth of white blood cells.

This Sunday, 4th February, is World Cancer Day and marks a day for us all to unite against cancer in a bid to beat this disease sooner. There are over 200 types of cancer, and the money raised by fundraisers on behalf of several charities allows for researchers to identify and develop new diagnostic tools and treatments to fight cancer. Thanks to the efforts of the public and the charities, money raised for cancer research has helped double some cancer survival rates in the last 40 years.
