We engage with patients, schools, donors and our local community to share how we're improving cancer care, welcome visitors to our labs and inspire the next generation of scientists. We also work closely with people affected by cancer to shape our research and ensure that it reflects the needs and experiences of the people it is designed to help.

Research is more valuable when the people it aims to benefit have opportunities to help shape it. At Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London, we work with people affected by cancer, patient advocates, young people and our wider communities to inform our research, share knowledge and make science more accessible.

We work with the charity Independent Cancer Patients' Voice to run a course in London for cancer patient advocates that aims to explain the research pipeline; from ideas through experiments to clinical trials.

We run two schools experience programmes: STARS and BURSThrough, which seek to break down perceived barriers to higher education and ignite students’ aspirations to pursue careers in science.

The first science education centre in the world to be located within working biomedical research laboratories, Centre of the Cell is directed by Professor Frances Balkwill, Professor of Cancer Biology at the Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London.
