VacV Biotherapeutics is translating more than 20 years of research at Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London into a new class of cancer immunotherapies. Its platform is based on an engineered Vaccinia virus designed to both destroy cancer cells and stimulate a sustained immune response.
Founded by Professor Yaohe Wang and Professor Nicholas Lemoine, the company reflects BCI’s strengths in immunology, cell and gene therapy, and translational research. It has secured seed investment and support from organisations including the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult, highlighting confidence in its scientific and commercial potential.
VacV’s approach is notable for its potential to be delivered intravenously, allowing treatment to reach tumours throughout the body. The company is initially focusing on hard-to-treat cancers, with the aim of broadening the effectiveness of immunotherapy and improving outcomes for patients who currently have limited options.
