First steps towards a vaccine for pancreatic cancer

Researchers from Barts Cancer Institute and Zhengzhou University have developed a personalised vaccine system that could ultimately delay the onset of pancreatic cancer. The study reports the team’s work with a pre-clinical model using mice, and provides strong proof-of-concept for the creation of a vaccine for cancer prevention in individuals at high risk of developing this disease.

New research funded by PCRF

The Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund is supporting two new research projects at the Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London. The projects, led by Professor Hemant Kocher and Dr Gunnel Halldén, will aim to identify ways to enhance the efficacy of treatments for pancreatic cancer, to ultimately help those affected by this devastating disease.

Cervical Screening Awareness Week
12th June 2019
This week (10-16th June) is Cervical Screening Awareness Week, an initiative started by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of cervical screening. In the UK, approximately 3,200 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer annually, making it the 14th most common cancer in women. Cervical screening, otherwise known as a smear test, can help to prevent cervical cancer, which claims 870 lives per year.

Using a modified adenovirus to overcome treatment resistance in prostate cancer

Researchers from BCI’s Centre for Molecular Oncology, led by Dr Gunnel Halldén, have identified a mechanism by which a modified flu-like virus, called AdDD, is able to negate resistance to a drug called mitoxantrone and increase tumour cell killing in prostate cancer models. This mechanism is dependent on B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2)- a protein involved in the regulation of cell death (apoptosis).
